Accteen3ording to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention suicide is the fifth leading cause of death among those 5-14 years old and the third leading cause of death among those 15-24 years old.

Between 1980-1996, the suicide rate for African-American males aged 15-19 has doubled.

The foundation includes the risk factors for suicide among the young:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Psychiatric disorders (such as depression, impulsive aggressive behavior, bipolar disorder, certain anxiety disorders)
  • Drug and/or alcohol abuse
  • Previous suicide attempts, with the risk increased if there is situational stress and access to firearms
